Old Times Pinter, Harold

Like pinter's earlier plays. There are only three characters -- a man named Deeley, his wife, and Anna, Kate, a friend of Kate's whom they have not seen in 20 years. Beneath the surface of their taut, witty conversation lurks suggestions of darkness, until the present is overwhelmed with intimations of some frightening past.

Pinter deals with bare essentials.

Housekeeping: A Novel

Picador USA. A modern classic, first under the care of their competent grandmother, who grow up haphazardly, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, their eccentric and remote aunt.

The crying of Lot 49. It is a town "chastened by an outsized landscape and extravagant weather, and chastened again by an awareness that the whole of human history had occurred elsewhere. Ruth and lucille's struggle toward adulthood beautifully illuminates the price of loss and survival, and the dangerous and deep undertow of transience.

It is bellow’s vision, his uncanny ability to seize the moment and to see beyond it. Chicago sun-times fading charmer Tommy Wilhelm has reached his day of reckoning and is scared. What makes all of this so remarkable is not merely Bellow’s eye and ear for vital detail.
